Newark Education Fund Launched to Ensure Quality Education in Newark

on Tuesday, 01 February 2011.

Jaffe Communications recently coordinated the launch of the Newark Education Trust, an independent, permanent non-profit local education fund focused on ensuring a quality education for all Newark children.

Ross Danis, the former associate dean of education at Drew University’s graduate school and the newly appointed executive director of the Newark Education Trust, says the organization is different from all other groups in Newark that are focused on reforming education in the city.

“Until now, Newark has not had a local education fund working in conjunction with the school district, the community and city leadership to improve the quality of education in the city’s public schools,” Danis says. “We will fill that void by developing ideas, coordinating efforts and aligning resources to improve the quality of public education.”

Rutgers University history professor Clement Price, the chair of the Newark Education Trust’s Board of Trustees, says Newark has gone far too long without a local education fund.

“We have seen in other cities like New York, Boston and Washington, D.C., the difference that a local education fund has made in improving the quality of public schools,” says Price, who is also the director of the Institute on Ethnicity, Culture, and the Modern Experience at Rutgers-Newark. “We have high expectations that the Newark Education Trust will do the same for public schools in Newark.”

They’re ready for action.

That’s what members of a new education fundraising group are vowing.

“We live in the space between rhetoric and reality,” said Ross Danis, a state educational scholar and the executive director of the Newark Education Trust, a local education fund that opened for business today.

The group, one of roughly 80 education funds around the nation, takes private dollars and attacks specific, concrete issues affecting schools. The group has two main thrusts: amplify successful programs already in operation, and eliminate roadblocks to more effective schooling.

Danis was joined by fund chairman and Newark historian Clement Price, School Advisory Board president Shavar Jeffries, public school officials, private donors and about 20 elementary students at the city’s Mount Vernon School, where the launch was announced.
