The Delaware River - recreation and reservoirs - is in imminent danger | Opinion

Management of the New York City reservoirs in the upper reaches of the Delaware River Watershed has enormous implications for millions of people in our region.

A standoff between New York City and the four states of the Delaware River Basin over who manages what is threatening our water resources.

Water releases from the reservoir system keep salt away from the drinking water intakes in Philadelphia and New Jersey. It also protects the ecology of the river, featuring an internationally renowned cold water fishery, many recreational opportunities, and ensures both drought relief and flood protection.

NJ Audubon President Discusses How to Have a Wildlife-Friendly Yard

It took more than two decades but the state’s Water Supply Plan has finally been updated. Politicians, developers and water resource professionals have argued that without it, the state couldn’t plan for development. Or make allowances for drought. Or avoid over-pumping streams that damage the environment. The blueprint traditionally looks at water quality as well as supply to identify what infrastructure needs upgrading. While some expressed relief at getting the update, others are calling the plan “flawed and incomplete.” The public gets to weigh in at three hearings this summer.

More state funds are needed to fight autism

The New Jersey Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NJSHA) will join with many other advocates to draw more attention to the fact that tens of thousands of people across America are facing an autism diagnosis this year.
