Sinking Gives Old Cargo Ship a Second Life as a Reef

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department creates a diving destination and an artificial reef out of an old cargo vessel, the Kraken.

On January 20 a massive cargo ship dubbed the Kraken was sunk 67 mi off the coast of Freeport, Texas, under clear skies in a calm sea. The rusty, 371 ft long blue ship had 2,200 tons of concrete in its hold to ensure that it would sink perfectly and land upright on the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.

Snowy Owls Spotted in New Jersey

Arctic raptors are landing along our shores. Far south of their normal hunting grounds. Whether because their food supply is dwindling or their population is exploding or the climate is confusing. The majestic federally protected snowy owls are back. Any time a species appears far afield it gets ornithologist’s attention.
