Master Class #47: PR vs. Advertising. What's the Darn Difference?

Our clients often ask: Is there really any difference between advertising and public relations?

You bet there is.

PR is about ongoing communication with targeted audiences, while advertising is all about action. (i.e. Buy Now!)

Both are highly-impactful communication tools. But folks should know there is a difference.

The best definitions:

  • Public Relations: Sharing valuable news and insight with stakeholders and media - building an ongoing and vocal  community of supporters
  • Advertising: Selling a product or service, or asking something of your market that requires a distinct call to action.

You can say that PR is a more subtle and lasting way to build market share than an advertising push. Together - using both traditional and digital technologies - a PR/advertising campaign is a dynamic duo - the most powerful way to get your message out.
