The Jaffe Briefing - January 3, 2018

OUR TAKE ON THE NEWS IN NEW JERSEY

TRENTON - If you are thumbing through the calendar, be quick to note that there are just 13 days left in the Christie Administration. Yet the big guy isn't ready to fade away, as his anti-opioid commercials fill our airwaves, morning, noon and night. There's some other unfinished business, as Christie tries to reshape his legacy after vanishing from office for a couple of years or so. He still wants to get a couple of state office buildings constructed (now in litigation) and is now pushing for a marina to be built in Liberty State Park in Jersey City (also in litigation). Perhaps this is another great opportunity for our lame-duck governor to disappear.

OUR TAKE ON THE NEWS IN NEW JERSEY

ON THE RAILS - Fresh off federal tax reform that slammed New Jersey, the Trump Administration has yet another gift for the Garden State: Backing off the $12.7 billion project to build the much-needed rail tunnel under the Hudson River. Yes, everyone knows New Jersey is a Blue state, and we must continually pay the price for that. But the fact that Trump is ignoring the Obama agreement that pledges half of the funding from the federal treasury is frighteningly short-sighted. Perhaps someone should remind Trump of all his real estate holdings here, and across the river. Greed, in this case, is good.

OUR TAKE ON THE NEWS IN NEW JERSEY

JERSEY CITY - Season's greetings and peace on Earth. Unless you happen to be an imam from Jersey City, who apparently called Jews in Israel "apes and pigs." NJ 101.5 reports about this imam asking Allah's help to kill them "down to the very last one" during a startling sermon at the Islamic Center of Jersey City on Friday. The spewing hate was all prompted by the move of the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. The imam says it is a "religious obligation" to regain control of the area surrounding the Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of the holiest sites in Islam. This spiritual leader spit out some other horrid stuff, not worth summarizing here or anywhere. Eager to hear a strong and visceral response from area imams, denouncing the hate and crazy call for violence.

OUR TAKE ON THE NEWS IN NEW JERSEY

TRENTON - A state budget with "honest" numbers? That may soon be coming to New Jersey, as Phil Murphy has vowed to develop budgets based on real numbers, as opposed to financial manipulations as "sleight of hand" that has been the hallmark of Trenton's good ol' budget-crunching. Murphy said budgets would be based "solidly in reality with honest numbers and achievable goals," adding "that's not something we've seen in Trenton in awhile." It's an obvious swipe at the current administration, which has dealt the state 11 credit downgrades and a dead-last ranking among states' ranking in fiscal health. So, are we actually talking an end to the one-shot revenue gimmicks? Likely response from Gov. Chris Christie: "Yeah, good luck with that, Phil."
