OUR TAKE ON THE NEWS IN NEW JERSEY

ON THE RAILS - Fresh off federal tax reform that slammed New Jersey, the Trump Administration has yet another gift for the Garden State: Backing off the $12.7 billion project to build the much-needed rail tunnel under the Hudson River. Yes, everyone knows New Jersey is a Blue state, and we must continually pay the price for that. But the fact that Trump is ignoring the Obama agreement that pledges half of the funding from the federal treasury is frighteningly short-sighted. Perhaps someone should remind Trump of all his real estate holdings here, and across the river. Greed, in this case, is good.

AT THE STORE - Already feeling rich in 2018? That's obviously because of the big 16-cent increase in the state's minimum wage, which kicked in yesterday. It is the largest minimum wage bump in New Jersey in years, bringing the rate to $8.60 an hour, or around $18,000 annually. We're talking about $333 more for a worker in 2018, compared to 2017, and certainly not enough to make any impact whatsoever in such an expensive state. But at least the rate is higher than the national number, $7.25 an hour, but not as high as Washington D.C., now offering a generous minimum of $12.40 per hour.

ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL - Happy New Year! And that means it is already time to talk about the Congressional elections taking place in 10 months. That's because Democrats are salivating over three New Jersey Congressional seats that could flip in a Trump backlash across the state. Rep. Frank LoBiondo, a Republican, is retiring, while Democrats are also targeting the seats of Rep. Leonard Lane and Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen. It's all part of a national push to flip 24 seats, which would give the Democrats control of the House in mid-term elections. But before the Dems smell blood, there's the nagging issue of gerrymandering. These seats won't flip easily, as incumbency is the national pastime of the U.S. Congress.

SOUTH JERSEY - For years, the 609 area code was as quintessential South Jersey as Pork Roll. But now all those people who live from southern Middlesex County to Cape May will soon see a second area code, 640, seeping into their treasured part of the state in 2018, to handle the ongoing burst of phone numbers. If you care to ignore 640, that's fine. But any true 609-er must still be prepared to now dial 10 digits, as opposed to just seven digits, when making local calls as the new area code phases in. So, yes, South Jersey will soon be joining the rest of society, which has been forced to dial area codes for a couple of decades now.

HOBOKEN - Mayor Ravi Balla's first action after becoming Hoboken's mayor yesterday was signing an executive that declares Hoboken a "fair and welcoming" city. The move is intended to send an "unmistakable message" that the city won't do the federal government's bidding when it comes to immigration enforcement, NJ.com reports. Following Newark, Jersey City, a host of smaller towns and now Hoboken, perhaps more towns will take similar steps as an anti-Trump becomes governor in a couple of weeks.

IN OTHER IMPORTANT NEWS

HOUSTON - It was the date from hell, which then became national news. A drunken Dallas woman was on a first date with a super-rich Houston lawyer. All seemed to go okay on the date, we guess, with her drinking plenty at dinner.  The 49-year-old lawyer then brought the 29-year-old woman back to the house and - when it was clearly time for her to go - called an Uber. But she refused to leave, hiding in the house and then going nuts. She tore down several paintings, including two Andy Warhol pieces, poured red wine on others and apparently threw two $20,000 sculptures across the room - all while yelling obscenities. Total cost in damages: $300,000. But, again, can you really put a price on love?

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

It was this day in 1995 that scientists use the Kenk telescope in Hawaii to identify a galaxy about 15 billion light years away, where all living things likely don't care that Alabama is playing Georgia for the national championship on Jan. 8.
